SHARING MY FRIENDS

I’m in the board room at Simon & Schuster, my publisher. The walls are white. There is a l-o-n-g rectangular table surrounded by high-back chairs. My students are sitting in them. LIFE INTERSECTION

I got up in the middle of the night to write this post.

I know a guy who has spent his whole life swinging a hammer. His thumb nails are purple. The skin on his fingers is permanently cracked. He’s not comfortable in church. Prefers to spend his Sunday mornings walking the beach, looking for sea glass. But he’s closer to God than most men I see in the pews.

OUR DOORS ARE OPEN

Last summer I founded the Institute for Writing and Mass Media at Southern Virginia University. One of its purposes is to bring together aspiring writers, videographers, editors and photographers with top professionals in those fields. Our facility is a post and beam building a few miles from campus, where we put on interactive workshops, house our guest speakers, and hold dinners and fireside chats that enable students and professionals to interact in an intimate environment.
