Last week the Tiger Woods biography was named a finalist for Sports Book of the Year in the United Kingdom. The winner will be announced at the end of November in London. I am headed there for the announcement.

I'm often asked what it takes to write a bestselling biography. If you believe in the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words, this picture illustrates what Armen Keteyian and I did on the Tiger book. The photo was taken by my son one year ago when we were buried in source notes. If you look closely, there are five surfaces — four tables and one desk — covered in source material.

The other key ingredient is a team of talented, dedicated professionals — editors, agents, designers, and so on — that work together to lift a narrative from good to great. And in our case, we benefited from a great team of people from Simon & Schuster’s UK imprint.

My hat is off to the other five finalists for Sports Book of the Year. Win, lose or draw, I’m just grateful to be in the mix.
