Tonight a television documentary produced by Jeff Benedict & Associates will air on BYUtv, a worldwide cable/satellite television channel that reaches 60 million homes in the U.S. via DirecTV, Dish Network and over 500 cable systems. The film, titled “Bill Child,” is based on Jeff Benedict’s book How to Build a Business Warren Buffett Would Buy: The R.C. Willey Story.

The documentary chronicles the rags-to-riches rise of Bill Child, a farm boy from rural Utah who inherited a family-owned appliance business in the 1950s and turned into one of the most successful furniture chains in the U.S. Warren Buffett bought the company in 1995. Today R.C. Willey Home Furnishings is worth an estimated $1 billion. Both Buffett and Child were interviewed for the film.

Benedict produced the film and conducted most of the on-camera interviews. “The film is essentially a story that reminds us that the American dream is still alive and kicking,” Benedict said. “Bill Child is living proof of that. How else do you explain a boy who starts off in farm overalls and ends up a CEO who sells his company to Warren Buffett?”

Benedict is a contributing writer for Sports Illustrated and Deseret News. He’s also the author of ten books, including the recently self-published book Poisoned. And although he wrote the book that gave rise to the Bill Child documentary, Benedict chose not to write the script. That job fell to New York-based script writer Peri Muldofsky. The film was edited by Christine Dupree.

“Peri and Christine are very, very talented,” Benedict said. “Better still, they are exceptional people to work with. And we feel pretty lucky to have had such exceptionally good people to feature in the film. You couldn’t script people more true than Bill Child and Warren Buffett.”
